Important information for customers
Piercing aftercare
Listen to your body and take good care of your piercing! Not only for the next 2 days, but for the next 2 months at least!
Never touch your piercing without washing your hands with soap and water before and after.
If you have a threaded piercing, remember to check once in a while if it fits well
Never remove the jewelry to clean a new piercing!
Replace jewelry as infrequently as possible and never keep it out of the piercing for too long.
Do not buy the cheapest jewelry - the price reflects the quality.
When you drink enough water, your body is healthier and has a greater chance of healing faster.
Turn down smoking, alcohol and other toxins.
Keep a healthy and balanced diet
Pus will come out of your piercing. It is completely normal while it heals - no worries.
Most piercing infections are easy to cure and antibiotics should be used only as a last resort.
Make sure to take good care of your piercing. More on that will come a little later.
Avoid cleaning too much. 3-4 times a day is just fine for most healthy piercings.
Make sure everything you use in your daily life is clean (eg bedding, clothes, etc.)
Avoid sleeping on or pressing on your piercing while it heals.
Use only an aftercare solution. If it does not work, contact your piercer.
Oral piercings (tongue, lip, etc.) Clean for 60 seconds with chlorhexidine in mouth 2-3 times daily. It is best to do this after brushing your teeth in the morning and in the evening.
We also recommend having a bottle of water with you at all times so you can clean your mouth after meals or drinks (coffee, tea, etc.) Cleansing is good even if you do it for only 10 seconds.
Surface piercings (neck, madison, etc.) Surface piercings are the most difficult to heal. Good healing depends on: choice of jewelry, depth, location, lifestyle, or length. Eg. the longer the stone, the harder the pus to dry. If you wear shirts every day, they can irritate a neck piercing, and a gardener and wrist piercing do not go well together either. It is always good for surface piercings to use saline solution, best twice daily or more.
FAQs
When can I change the initial piece of jewelery?
It is not recommended to change the initial jewelry before your piercing is healed unless the new jewelry is sterile. For many piercings, it is necessary to change the jewelry while they heal, while reducing the swelling. It should be performed by your piercer in a professional studio and only with completely sterile jewelry.
Can I swim, after I get my piercing?
We recommend that you avoid swimming for a minimum of 4 weeks, but if your piercing is not healed after this time, you are very welcome to visit our studio for guidance.
Will I get an infection in my piercing?
I think I got an infection in my piercing - what should I do?
Infection can occur while your piercing is healing, not necessarily as a result of the piercing process. Every surgical procedure, whether it is tongue piercing or kidney transplantation, carries a risk of infection even if it is performed correctly and sterile. Remember to wash your hands to prevent infections.
Common symptoms of infections:
Pain and tenderness
Greater redness around the piercing
Prolonged bleeding
Yellow or green pus
Changed skin color around the piercing
The skin feels warm
The basic steps in wound infection treatment are to clean the wound, dry the infected material and use heat to improve circulation and stimulate the body's immune system.
In some cases, antibiotics are used, depending on the location of the infection and its severity. Cleaning and drying usually means soaking with saline solution and removing all: dead tissue, pus, dirt etc.
If you get piercing infection, the doctor will recommend removing the jewelry and leaving it all. It is very important for the piercer to talk to the doctor and try to explain that the jewelry should not be removed because it has drying function. Once the jewelry is removed, both ends of the piercing will close and the infection will not dry, which can lead to you getting an abscess.
An abscess is an infection that is pinched under your skin and therefore your skin becomes darker, harder, swollen and sore. In very rare cases of a serious infection where the tissue around the piercing becomes very damaged, the jewelry must be removed permanently and the dead tissue must be cut off to make healing possible.
This should be clearly explained to the piercer if necessary. Moist heat is best to improve the healing of the infected piercing, therefore using a warm, wet saline compress will be appropriate. Remember to wash your hands even more and avoid touching the jewelry. Bed linen or clothes with which the piercing is in direct contact must be changed daily.
Improve circulation and your immune system by eating healthy, avoiding alcohol and quitting smoking. It is very important, or in fact the most important, for your healing process.
Antibiotics are usually used only if the infection has spread widely beyond the piercing. It is called cellulite and occurs when the body can no longer fight the infection. Redness, heat and extreme tenderness that spreads more than 1cm can make you suspect cellulite. In most cases, early treatment with antibiotics stops the infection before it becomes more severe.
Infections of cartilage piercings e.g. nose or upper ear has a longer healing time, because cartilage does not have its own blood supply, it depends on other tissues to get oxygen and other nutrients delivered by diffusion. It makes cartilage more prone to infections and difficult to heal. When cartilage is destroyed by the infection it can lead to nose or ear deformation. Although most infections heal well with early use of antibiotics, you need to be aware that this risk exists.
